Ethernet over Coaxial cable (EoCNA) is a technology allowing Fast Ethernet 100Mbps speed over classic CATV/CCTV coaxial cable. The new Industrial grade, hardened to extreme temperatures and DIN rail mountable IEXT101-EOC extenders are designed to work in a pair (IEXT101-EOC-A and IEXT101-EOC-B) and operate strictly from PoE power.

The A unit gets its power from an IEEE 802.3af/at PoE PSE port (usually from a switch or injector) and then sends that PoE power over the coaxial cable (recommended minimum RG-59 type). The remote IEXT101-EOC-B model powers itself from the coaxial cable and then relays remaining PoE budget as a PSE device on its own RJ-45 10/100Base-Tx UTP port.

The length of reach dictates speed and availability of remote PoE budget: For 100m of RG-59 cable remote unit can deliver up to 21W of PoE at 100M speed of data. At the farthest reach of 1000m, the IEXT101-EOC pair will only deliver 4W of PoE power and speed will be capped at 10M only.

Applications of Ethernet-over-Coax include Internet extension or LAN extension where an existing coaxial cable network is in place. They are also useful in upgrades of CCTV Surveillance systems to IP based Surveillance, where Ethernet data must be sent over an existing coaxial cable network and PoE budget can be used to power a low consumption IP camera without worries of additional power feed lines for remote node. Last, but not least, Ethernet over Coax could be a Home Networking solution, bringing Ethernet to each room of a house over the existing coaxial cabling.
